How Photos and Music Can Help Seniors with Memory Loss

At our community, we believe that every day should be full of joy and fulfillment for our residents, especially those with Alzheimer’s, and other memory issues. Our lifestyle and therapy program provides residents with routines, therapies, and activities that help them feel fulfilled and happy. One of the important pieces of memory care is offering activities that stimulate the senses and help residents feel calm and comforted. Music and photos both play an important part in comforting memory care.

A Connection to Memories

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, studies have shown that music can help those with Alzheimer’s. Even if they have memory loss, people can enjoy a familiar song from their childhood. The emotions and memories relating to music can last longer than other forms of memory. As Jonathan Graff-Radford, M.D., writes, “Musical memories are often preserved in Alzheimer’s disease because key brain areas linked to musical memory are relatively undamaged by the disease.”

A Means of Communication

Dementia can cause problems with verbal communication, but music can help engage people. Put on someone’s favorite type of song or music, and they’ll be smiling or dancing!

A Way to Set the Mood

Familiar music has been known to improve mood and behavior, decreasing depression and anxiety. Playing music each day can set the right mood and create a positive environment. And the caregivers enjoy this mood-lifter too, so it is a win for everyone!

A Way to Increase Cognition

Besides the benefits to mood, music can come with cognitive benefits. Music therapy has been shown to increase organization and focus, which are common struggles for those with dementia.
